Work Diary - Shoot 3: Brighton

Evaluation

For this shoot I wanted to capture the famous tourist points of Brighton as well as the busy crowded places like the beach and the pier, I set my camera to F22, ISO 200 and a shutter speed of 1/125. To begin with, I experimented with shooting at different angles as well as using landscape and portrait images. I shot the crowded beach the most, as the seaside is the main element of Brighton. I also took a lot of different photos with different angles of the Brighton Eye, as it was a really sunny day, so the sky was bright blue and the Eye looked great in contrast with the blue. The pier has a massive light up sign which I liked because it literally said "Brighton Pier", so I shot photos of this with the intention that I would create an animation of the lights changing, but this did not work out because it was difficult to capture the same positioned photo, as people were walking across the pier and seagulls were flying about. However, I did like the shots I got with the seagulls in them, as this added to the beach side theme. Overall, this shoot was extremely successful because I got a lot of photos out of it, and I was also able to create two animations out of a few images.

This is one of my shots of the Brighton beach and pier in the background. I like this photo a lot, and took some very similar shots of the same view, as I wanted to make sure I had a few good images. When editing, I decided to change this photo into black and white as it adds an old, vintage vibe to the image, and it reminds me of people in the olden days swing dancing and hanging out in the streets with loads of friends, but modernized, as it is on the beach and there are loads of busy crowds on the beach. I also like that the pier is the length of the image, which I adjusted by cropping it in Photoshop. This photo was also inspired by Martin Parr along with my other beach photos, as I wanted to execute the same feeling of the seaside and enjoyment, which Parr does in his images.

This is one of my shots of the Brighton pier. I like this photo especially because of the angle, as most of my pier shots were straight forward, whereas this one is at an angle slightly. I cropped the image so that the sign was in the center, and also so that the flags were meeting the top of the image. This is an image that I think particularly identifies Brighton in its best light, because the pier is a significant tourist attraction for the city. However, I would like the photo to be a little brighter, and therefore my re-edit this image as I like the over saturation of colours in my other images, as they are very Martin Parr-esque, who was my inspiration.

This is one of the animations I made of the Brighton beach and the wheel. For this animation I used Photoshop timeline and used the images I shot which were extremely similar, this makes it look as though the wheel is turning, people are walking and moving and there is also a seagull flying across the shot. I like this animation a lot as well as the others that I have created. I think the movement of the sea and everything else really captures what Brighton is like, which was my aim with this shoot. I enjoyed creating this animation and plan to create many more within this project.

Progression

In my next shoot, I plan to visit London Hyde Park, and show a contrast of busy Brighton as oppose to a less busy place in London. My aim is still the same, to shoot people naturally so that I capture their true expressions. After this shoot, I did plan on going into busier places in London such as Oxford Street and Central London but there are many reasons as why I cannot do this. Therefore, after my Hyde Park shoot I plan to shoot locally - but want to focus on one model rather than loads of people in the streets. This will help my work transition from street photography into portraiture.
