The photographer of the
photo above is Mo Gelber, a photo journalist/ street photographer. Gelber isn't
very famous but this one particularly shot now known, as 'The Last Kiss' was an
exclusively famous photo from his work. This photo shows a man and women, a
couple being arrested for a crime, but reaching in for their 'last' kiss before
being taken away by the police. Gelber says he had very little time to actually
get his camera out and the exposure correct, but managed to take the image.
During the time, he was shooting for a contact called 'Project Imagination',
which is why he was so eager to take this shot. The photo went viral and did
manage to be picked by judges of the contest for the final ten best
photographs, but was disqualified at the last minute as Gelber wasn't able to
get the consent forms signed by each of the four people in the photo. This
photo was taken in New York, Manhattan. The punctum of this image is the kiss,
the display of affection and close physical intimacy between the two people
being pulled away from each other - which is what draws you in and is the first
thing that you look at.
The connotations of this
image refer to love, final moments, lust, and rebellion as it shows a couple
captured in one last desperate moment to be affectionate towards each other
before they're arrested. Gelber has captured a memorable moment and a story
with this image, such as the story of how he came about taking the photo and the
story of the arrest.
The denotation of the
photograph is that it shows, a couple, man and woman being arrested and
separated by two individual police officers.
