My image above was taken when I visited London Hyde Park and was shooting 'Street Photography'. In this photo, we can see two young boys cycling on Santander Bank bicycles. I like this image a lot because of the depth shown within the narrowing of the cycle path, but also because the trees get smaller. This image is also rather interesting because it shows a normal thing happening naturally in an ordinary setting. When you zoom into the image, you can see the facial expressions of the two boys, who both look rather happy. The colours of this photo are rather vibrant such as the green grass and leaves, which also connects with the happiness of the young boys cycling. 

In the image I have found on the Internet, we can see two teenagers cycling on Barclays Bank bicycles. In this image they are cycling down a road, and smiling. I like this image due to the depth of the road and buildings, as they become narrower and smaller. I also like that the two teenagers are wearing brightly coloured t-shirts, despite the weather looking quite grey and cold. In this image, there are hardly any other people, but only a few cars parked along the road, so our soul focus is on the two teenagers riding the bikes. 

These photos connect because they both show two people cycling in London, looking really happy. I like both of these images a lot because they both show depth, and therefore show how far the people in the images have cycled. These images are a clear representation of what Londoners do on a bright and sunny day. Despite the images being shot in different places in London, it shows that people use the Bank bicycles to travel around London, for fun.

For my image shown above, I used Multiple Flash to create 3 different faces. To do this, I asked my model to move between each flash (which I set off with a remote control), and asked her to change the position of her head and her facial expression. For instance, in the first shot, whereby my model is looking to the left, she looks blank and has no expression whatsoever. Whereas in the second shot, and in her second 'face' she is smiling and looking directly into the camera lens, and in her third shot and third 'face' she is looking down at the floor, with a very frustrated and sad facial expression. I used Multiple Flash to create the idea of multiple identities and multiple emotions all at once, and I believe this photo achieves that concept. 

In the image I have found on the Internet, the photographer has created a similar concept. In this image, the model is looking to the left, with a blank expressionless face, to the front with her hands covering her face, and to the right with her mouth wide open. Like my own image, this creates the idea of feeling 3 different things all at once, and also shows three sides to that model. I like how the photographer used a black background to enhance the look of the image, as the photo is darker and more mysterious with a dark background, and the shadows link with the feelings that the facial expressions from the model appear to portray. 

These photos are connected because both the Internet photographer and I have used Multiple Flash to create three different faces using one photographer. We both have also used a black background with this. I like these images because both the Internet photographer and I were able to express our idea using one image, without much editing. I also like how interesting the image is, because there isn't just one focal point, as you have to look at each individual 'face' and what it expresses. These photos emulate stories about their model and show different emotions through the different faces.

The image I produced above was in my shoot titled 'Drowning'. Whereby I used water to depict the feelings of depression and anxiety, along with other mental illnesses. To do this, I asked my model to stand underneath a showerhead, and let the water drip down her face and smudge her makeup. This literally makes it look as though she is 'drowning' but I wanted this to portray the feelings of being immersed in thousands of emotions and thoughts, so the water is actually a metaphor for what suffering with mental illness feels like. I made this image black and white; as I thought colour was too bright considering the concept of the image is quite dark and depressing. 

The image I have found on the Internet is of a young girl with water dripping across her face. This is an extreme close-up shot as the camera is zoomed in right into the girls face. The girl herself, is looking in to the camera lens, despite that the water is dripping from her face and hair. I like this image because the water is evident and you can see the drips along her face, which almost look like tears. This image is also black and white, which links to the feelings of sadness, which also connects with the idea that the water is the models tears. 

These images are connected because they both portray similar messages of sadness. The photographer of the image from the Internet, and I have created dark, black and white images that explicitly tell a story about the model. The use of water is also very similar, as the other photographer and I have captured the water dripping down our models faces, as though both models are drowning. Despite the image from the Internet being more of a close-up than my own image, I believe I have captured the same sort of feeling throughout anyway. 

Work Diary - Shoot 13: Underwater

Evaluation

For this shoot, I decided to continue with the use of water, but this time have a model lay in the bath, and be completely immersed in the water - which I assumed would then distort their face. For this shoot, my camera was set to 22F, ISO 200, and a shutter speed of 1/125. This idea is a follow up of Shoot 12 whereby I shot photos of a model in the shower, with water running down her face. I have enjoyed these two shoots because they portray the message of suffering very well, by emulating the feelings of drowning, frustration, and numbness. Most of the images in this shoot are black and white because this enhanced the emotion of the image, by making it more dark, depressing and scary. In some of the images the model is completely under the water, whereas in others their head is the only thing floating. I enjoyed shooting this because it is completely different to all my other shoots, particularly those at the beginning of this project, but it has also allowed me to explore and experiment with different types and techniques of portraiture. 

In this image the model is lying in the water, which is covering everything, apart from it is surrounding his face. The model is also looking directly into the camera, and because of this, as well as the black and white effect; this photo depicts a sad and emotional feeling, as the model looks drained and exhausted. This image could be seen as a visual representation of the symptoms of depression, as this image shows that the model is drowning, but is aware of it happening, but yet cannot do anything about it. 

In this image however, the model is completely under the water with his eyes shut tightly. From this, we can see that the model is holding their breath, but is slowly losing air as there are bubbles coming from his nose and mouth. I like this image because it shows that time is passing, and the model is losing air to breathe; yet he's still completely under the water. I also like that due to the black and white, it doesn't even look like the model is underwater, so that this could literally be how he is feeling normally - panicked, breathless and scared.

Progression

This is the final shoot to my project, and overall I think all my shoots were enjoyable and have produced the images that I wanted. I have enjoyed watching my progression from street photography, to portraiture, to emotional portraiture. As well as learning new skills in the camera and editing fields.
